Benefits of an LED display for your business

LED displays are ubiquitous these days, and that’s no accident. They’re highly versatile and can make a major impact, particularly when they’re used for marketing and advertising. Nowadays, traditional billboards and posters just don’t catch the attention of passers-by quite like bright and vibrant LED displays.

Today we’ll be taking a look at what exactly LED displays are, how they work, and the benefits of using them for your business. So, if you’re on the fence about whether or not to transition to digital displays, read on to see how they can help you.

What is an LED display?

An LED (Light Emitting Diode) display is essentially a screen that uses small LEDs as their source to transmit light. They’re the successor of the LCD which used neon tubes, filtering white light to display colours and images. Many people had an LCD TV before LED was more readily available. The biggest differences between the two are size and colour quality. Screens on LEDs can be much thinner than their predecessors thanks to the lack of tubes.

What does LED Backlit display mean?

You’ve likely come across the term ‘LED-backlit display’ when browsing for any type of electronics that have a screen. But what exactly does LED-backlit display mean? Is it just another way of saying display? Not quite.

Though some people believe it is the same due to over usage of the phrase, there is a difference.

Traditionally, an LED-backlit display is achieved by filtering white UV light (similar to how an LCD works) into red, blue and green light to create the colours/picture. Whereas with a regular LED screen, red, blue or green light is generated directly by the diode. It’s said to create much higher quality colours and improve the crispness and contrast of content.

How do LED displays work?

As we just mentioned, LEDs generate either a red, green, or blue light which is then composited to create the colour on the display, just like you mix primary coloured paints to create greens, yellows, and every other colour.

Additionally, with LED lighting, black is achieved by just switching off the lights which is far more energy-efficient. This is what usually happens when you put your mobile phone into power-saving mode, all the black areas you see are the LED lights being switched off.

What types of LED displays can you use and why?

Because of their nature, LED displays are best viewed from a distance, which is why they’re great for things like billboards, screens at concerts, or even for outdoor signage.

However, there are also OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) displays which combine all the benefits of both LED displays and LED-backlit displays so that the screen can be viewed both up close and further away. Because of this, they can be more expensive as they’re more complicated to manufacture. Nevertheless, they work great for things like window displays.

5 Benefits of using an LED display for advertising

Now that we’ve looked at all the types of displays, what are their benefits in regard to advertising?

Brighter, crisper colours

LED displays can be brighter and more dynamic than traditional methods of marketing like window displays and posters. In retail, it also allows visual merchandisers to be creative electronically rather than with valuable stock. Take a look at this example below from one of our clients, Hype, who were able to create vibrant, eye-catching digital displays that turn heads. Such vibrant, glowing neon shades can’t be achieved in print, and especially not at this scale.

Option for videos

Static content can be boring but with the power of LED displays, you can bring your content to life. People are also far more likely to have their attention captured by something that’s moving as opposed to static ads, with a whopping 70% of passersby being reached by digital video. You can showcase ads, user-generated content, and even have interactive displays. If displays in your business are used for wayfinding, videos could show the floor plan or layout of your business so that people know exactly where they need to go and how to get there.

Easily updated

We live in a rapidly changing world, so your business needs to stay up-to-date, whether it be with the latest news or a healthy rotation of in-house promotions. Digital displays can be updated within just a couple of minutes, and everything gets saved on a cloud-based server that can be accessed and approved remotely. All you need is a solid Wi-Fi connection, a set of LED screens, and a simple media player device. It also allows your business to carry out easy A/B testing. If you have multiple locations across the country, you can try location-based marketing or even share something in Sydney that was successful in Melbourne for example – just to see if you have the same results.

Greater ROI on OOH Marketing

Prices for billboards and ad spaces in magazines are notoriously costly, and if you have a store-front, you have the perfect opportunity to advertise to potentially thousands per day without any major costs upfront. One study found that 80% of brands using digital displays and signs reported increased revenue of up to 33%.

Cost-effective over the long term

Though digital displays can be more expensive to install than a few flyers or even a temporary billboard, in the long run, digital becomes more cost-effective as you don’t have to pay for each time you want to display fresh ads. Simply log on to the server and update your content as you like. If you make a mistake, there’s no need to reprint, as you can edit content in seconds.

They’re also very hardy compared to paper or card signage that can easily show signs of wear.

Lastly, LED screens are inherently more energy-efficient than other types of displays, which keeps running costs down for your business. In short, they’re the obvious choice for digital signage hardware.
