LED vs OLED vs QLED – Which one is the best for you!

When hunting for the perfect screen for your digital signage display, sorting through the different technologies can be confusing. You’re after a simple screen to reach your customers, but it’s never that simple. LED, OLED, QLED… it might all sound the same to you, but each one offers different advantages and disadvantages depending on your intended use. What is LED TV?

LED or light emitting diode, is probably the term you have heard before, as it’s the most recognised on the market. Think of it as your standard screen. The LED screen has been around for many years now and essentially comprises an LCD panel with an LED backlight. 

So how does it work? LCDs on their own are quite dim, which isn’t ideal when you’re trying to get your marketing message out there for your customers to see. This is where LED technology comes into it. The LED backlights make the screen brighters to improve both picture contrast and quality. While this works well, you can never get perfect contrast, as the light will continue to shine through even if certain pixels have been turned off.

These screens are one of the most affordable choices on the market, and they do a great job as well.

What is OLED TV?

OLED, or organic light emitting diode, is a much more high-end technology, and as a result, you would expect more from them.  While you’ll note the LED aspect in there, the technology between the two screens is actually vastly different.

There’s no LCD panel on this option, which means no backlight needed from the LED. INstead, there’s organise matter generating both the colour and the light through electricity. This changes the way the technology works.

Since no backlight is needed, the pixels just turn themselves off when light isn’t needed. Those pixels will become completely black white no light still coming through from the back (like you would have with an LED screen).

As you might expect, the colours and the picture are very high-quality as a result. So, are there any negatives to this type of screen?

What is QLED TV?

Now, there’s just one more type of screen to get through. A QLED, or Quantum Dot Light Emitting Diode, is actually the most similar to an LED screen. It uses the LCD monitor with the LED backlight, the difference is they use quantum dots to offer up vibrant background colour.

These quantum dots are tiny and can emit light at different frequencies. This is what gives off such precise colour. You still face the same issues with contrast that comes with using a LED backlight.

When looking at all the different screens available, this one sits in the middle range. The colours are better than the LED screen, but not nearly on the same level as the OLED screen. In truth, there hasn’t been nearly as much uptake of these screens since they were first introduced. Many feel the technology isn’t quite there yet to offer enough advantages over the LED. Plus, price wise they’re very close to the OLED screen, so it makes sense to opt for that one!

Which one for your business
